Osprey Nest and Roseate Spoonbill

January 18, 2012 § 2 Comments

We have seen the man made nests atop tall poles for the ospreys to use but have never before seen ospreys nest. We did see such a thing on this trip to the Everglades in south Florida. We were visiting the Eco Pond near the Flamingo campground and saw one of the ospreys land in the upper most branches of a tall tree. Then we realized that it had some meat for the nest. After he flew away we could see that the other osprey was sitting on the nest which was most likely filled with eggs.

That same visit to the Eco Pond yielded a new sighting for us – a Roseate Spoonbill – a beautiful bird!

We were without phone/internet service while at the Flamingo campground last week. We are now at the Long Pine Key campground which is closer to Homestead/Florida City Florida and Miami.

We will include more in future posts.
