Mississippi River

September 15, 2012 § 1 Comment

We have been following the Mississippi River from around Pepin Wisconsin to near Muscatine Iowa.  Last week we were at Lock and Dam 14 near Hampton Illinois which is on the edge of the Quad Cities.  We got 30 TV channels and 4G cell service and were able to see some of the barge traffic through the lock although that was limited because the lock was on the other side of the river.

We are now in a campground with a much improved view of the Mississippi traffic just upstream from Lock and Dam 16 near Muscatine Iowa.

The night we arrived, the host came around and announced that the New Delta Queen had just left.  We did not know from where it left but eventually at a quarter till 8 that night it came past our camp site all lit up.  The only thing we had handy was the cell phone in the dark.

Actually, the New Delta Queen is the American Queen and plies the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee Rivers.  Even though the paddle wheel turns, it doe not seem to propel the boat.  The engines sound as if they are turning screws.

We will be staying in Champaign IL for a while for physicals, colonoscopy, and eyes and what ever other fun things we can think of including planning our winter quarters.
