Iowa to the Gulf of Mexico

December 21, 2012 § Leave a comment

After we were at Muscatine Iowa, we stopped through Northern Illinois to have lunch with Brother Roger and Sister in Law Pat before spending a month Doctoring and visiting with Gregg and Genia in Champaign-Urbana Illinois.

We then stopped at Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky for a few days before following the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway south through Northern Mississippi and Eastern Alabama.  There are Corps of Engineers campgrounds every 50 miles or so.  We really enjoy seeing new surroundings every week or two – sometimes every 3 or 4 days.  Peg loves the water and we enjoy the river traffic.

We then landed in Davis Bayou Campground in the Gulf Islands National Seashore at Ocean Springs Mississippi for three and a half weeks.

This Thursday, we moved to the Fort Pickens Campground on the Pensacola Florida side of the Gulf Islands National Seashore near Gulf Breeze/Pensacola Beach where we had reservations.  We will be there until January 3.

We have been busy with maintenance.  First was replacing the toilet flush cable.  That was fun!

The next problem was the light over the sink and the light & fan of the stove vent hood stopped working.  After much detective work, it became apparent that the mouse we had for a guest a while back had chewed part way through the wire and it finally burnt the rest of the way through.  Since we don’t bend and crawl the way we used to and the wiring is in very tight spaces, we probably will not be able to find the actual break.  We will be trying to isolate the area so we can bypass it with a new wire.  That is ongoing as we get the energy.

The new refrigerator we installed in Montana is working out well.  Our old one would blow the gas burner out if there was a cross wind on the highway and we would have to restart it manually.  The new one relights automatically so we don’t know if it blows out or not.

We have been very lucky not being ill much but Harrison finally has a cold.  Hopefully, Peg won’t catch it.  We’re pretty sure he caught it standing in line at the post office in Ocean Springs.  That post office always has a line!  Our mail should have been there the 6th or 7th of December.  It was still not there when we last checked on the 19th.  The post office clerk thought maybe it had been sent to the wrong ZIP and with the holiday load would be a while getting corrected.  Our mail forwarding gal is going to keep calling there to get it forwarded to Gulf Breeze when it finally arrives at Ocean Springs.  If that does not work, we will go back to Oceans Springs and stay at Davis Bayou again.  We usually don’t have any problems with the mail – but every once in a while ……..

All over this end of Santa Rosa Island are the remains of defensive installations that were constructed over the years.  The later facilities are huge bunkers that housed huge guns.  More about that later.
